Descendants of a shipment we got from Brazil in the late 1960s, they have flourished in New Zealand conditions and are now widespread here.
Widespread through South America, there are many forms from a variety of habitats. A very popular cultivated plant.
In Brazil it is used to make diuretic medicine that also has an antiblennorrhagic effect. (Rios A. & Khan, 1998)
