Southern Ecuador to central Peru at up to 2,400 m. The plant was difficult to photograph because of its peculiar flowering routine. It sends up a long, slender scape (flower stalk) 1.5 to 2 meters high, then develops the flower spikes at the very end. New plants form at intervals up the scape, then they in turn have long scapes with new plants on them - so you get plants spread out over huge distances rather quickly!
